A Flag in Every Window: What Does it All Mean?

Jaume Muñoz tells the Catalunya Barcelona film team how to decode the meaning behind all those flags hanging out apartment windows in Barcelona.

When you first come to Barcelona, you can see two flags flying from the windows: The official one is the Coat of arms of Catalonia, which is based on four red pallets on gold background. The unofficial one is the Estelada. It has the same design as the Senyera but with the addition of a five-pointed star in a triangle at the hoist. This flag is flown by Catalan separatists to express their support for an independent Catalonia.

Therefore, to know the political position of any family you just need to see the flags that fly on their windows. If you have the Catalan flag, it means that you feel Catalan. If you have the Estelada it means that you are a Catalan separatist.

The Spanish one means that, in that house, Spanish is the only spoken language.

Bueno, essencialment una persona quan arriba a Catalunya pot veure dues banderes diferents que pengen dels balcons i les finestres. Una és la bandera diguem oficial, l’escut heràldic de Catalunya, que és el fons groc i les quatre barres vermelles. I l’altre és una variació que és l’estelada, que és la mateixa bandera però amb un triangle amb una estrella.

Aquesta és la bandera independentista que implica un posicionament polític sobre l’autogovern de Catalunya. Llavors quan un es passeja per Barcelona pot veure molt bé cada família cap on es posiciona.

Si tens una bandera catalana vol dir que estàs a una família catalana, i si tens l’Estelada vol dir que són catalans i, a sobre, independentistes. Si tenen l’espanyola és que allà en aquella casa només es parla en castellà.
