Caputxinada

Catalunya Barcelona interview subjects talk about the clandestine formation of a Democratic Student Union at the Capuchin convent in Barcelona.

EN: The Democratic Student Union formed in March, 1966. It was illegal, and constituted in the Capuchin of Sarrià, here in Barcelona. People were really getting active. Older [students] held the Caputxianda, and some went to prison. But it was over in two days. In the convent of the Capuchin monks, in Barcelona’s Sarrià neighborhood, which was known as the Caputxinada.  Ultimately, the police knew about it. There were also important university lockdowns in Montserrat, and they were surrounded by the police. But this complicity, between religious progressives and university students, in the second half of the ’60s is important.
