Plaça de Catalunya is the most important Barcelona plaza. It’s not the most beautiful, and nobody who lives in Barcelona makes a point of hanging out at Placa de Catalunya. It’s generally crawling with tourists making there way to and from Les Rambles or grabbing a tour guide or tour bus. I call it most important because it’s the spot where everything leads when anything of import is happening. Big Barça celebration? To Plaça de Catalunya. Student sit-in? To Plaça de Catalunya. National emergency? To Plaça de Catalunya. Whenever there is a crisis or celebration affecting the city and its people, the tourist patio becomes the backdrop for citizen action.
