The 2nd Spanish Republic

Nobody wanted the [2nd Spanish] Republic. People went to vote for a municipal election, and Republican parties were victorious in the cities. And with improvisation, typical of the time, the city councils proclaimed the Republic.
The government in Madrid had two options: send the army and police into the streets and start a bloodbath, which would have proven ultimately disastrous. The army and police refused. They didn’t want any part of it.
The king left [Spain], and the Republic began. A Worker’s Republic? How nice! More accurately, a centralist constitution, A republic that undermined the statute of Catalunya at will, on the occasion that it was discussed. Much like today.
At a purely official level, the Republic stripped away the power of the Church. The 2nd Republic declared itself non-denominational. There’s nothing wrong with that. But what isn’t smart is to enact a policy against religion. Why? Because you’re attacking people’s beliefs.
You have to differentiate the church as an institution from the religion. One can argue against the institution. But the religion is tied to emotion and belief. And you have to respect that. [Instead], they obliterated it.

Ningú volia la República. O sigui, la gent va anar a votar unes eleccions municipals i a les ciutats van guanyar els partits republicans. I llavors van guanyar els partits republicans i amb la típica improvització de l’època, doncs van proclamar la República des de els ajuntaments. Llavors, el govern de Madrid tenia dues opcions: llençar l’exèrcit i la guàrdia civil al carrer i fer un bany de sang que hauria estat fatal a la llarga, o a mig termini i llavors l’exèrcit i la guàrdia civil van dir que no, que no jugaven i el rei va plegar i se’n va anar i per això va arribar la República.
Oh, sí, una república de trabajadores, què maco! Bé, una constitució centralista. Una república que quan es va discutir l’estatut per Catalunya el van retallar tant com van voler. O sigui que… Si fa no fot, com ara.
Nominalment li va treure poder, nominalment. La segona república es va declarar aconfessional, això no està malament. Però el que no està bé és fer una politica antireligiosa. Per què? Perquè amb això atemptes contra el sentiment de molta gent. O sigui, s’ha de diferenciar entre la institució església, i la religió.
La institució pot ser molt discutible, amb la religió toquem sentiments i creences i això és respectable. Llavors, a la república això ho van barrejar tot. La van cagar.
