The Lincoln Brigade: Americans in the Spanish Civil War

Let’s see…as far as the international brigades, and the Lincoln Brigade in particular, the North American brigade, one can’t be certain of the number [of volunteers], as accounts differ, perhaps 4,000 in total. Half of them died in combat. We’re talking about 2,000 people.
And what happened to the survivors? Those who returned to the United States? For the first time in US history, soldiers weren’t welcomed upon reaching home. Why?
Because they were fighting fascism? Well, most of them were communists, and communism
isn’t viewed favorably in the United States, the world’s most capitalist nation. Most of them were greeted with suspicion, supporters of anti-American activities.
A witch hunt was underway. Some served time in prison. They suffered humiliation. They were not allowed to fight in World War II. They were essentially punished for fighting in the
Spanish Civil War.
I think this was among America’s darkest hours, between the [communist] witch hunt, and what happened to the Lincoln Brigade.

Anem a veure. El cas de les brigades internacionals, en el cas concret del batalló Abraham Lincoln, que eren els nord-americans, no sé sap exactament quants van venir, sempre hi ha una xifra de números, uns 4000, potser van arribar a venir com a màxim.
La meitat va morir en combat. Estem parlant de gairebé 2000 persones. Doncs què va passar amb aquest contingent de tropes nord-americanes quan van tornar als Estats Units? Doncs va ser la primera vegada també en tota la història dels Estats Units que combatents americans van ser mal rebuts, pel seu propi país. Per què? Perquè van ser antifeixistes?
La majoria eren comunistes i clar, el comunisme als Estats Units, que és el país més capitalista del món, doncs no està ben vist. La majoria van ser qualificats de sospitosos i de fer fins i tot activitats antiamericanes. Molts d’ells van patir la caça de bruixes, molts d’ells van ser engarjolats, humiliats, no els van deixar lluitar a la II Guerra Mundial a molts d’ells, i van ser castigats per venir a lluitar a la Guerra Civil espanyola.
Jo trobo que és una de les parts més fosques de la història dels Estats Units. Tant la caçade bruixes com el que va passar amb el batalló Abraham Lincoln.
